My life with scissors

I've cut my hair more times than I can remember in the last two-and-a-half years. Always on an impulse in my bedroom, often with desk scissors.

The thing about me is, I like change simply for the sake of change. On my own terms, at least. So even if it doesn't turn out to be that great of a haircut, I'll be happy because it's something new.

I only occasionally miss the way my hair isn't.

But then I remind myself that my hair has been equally badly behaved at all lengths. And most of the time I  keep it pinned back anyways, so it really doesn't make a difference.

Do you believe in homemade haircuts?

  1. I've done it before.

But then I end up going to the cheap hair cutting place anyway, mostly because if they do it, my hair doesn't bug me as much.

  2. I recently cut my shoulder-blade length hair into an inch-long pixie cut. My hair always looks ratty so there is not much point wasting money at a hairdresser's.

  4. Absolutely. I haven't been to a hairdresser for at least 4 years and when I feel like my hair needs cutting I sort it myself. But then curly hair is easy like that!

  5. typewriter heather - My mom regularly offers to pay for me to get mine "fixed" at one of those places. :P

Poppy - Yes, I know! It was quite bold of you, and I think you pull it off well.

    odessa - Thankss :)

Em - HAHA I know you do!

Bridey - Yes, distinct advantage to curly hair there. (Mine's on the wavier end of curly.)

sui - That fits with what I know of you so far.

  6. Whenever I'm having a bad day, I have a habit of cutting my bangs. Eventually my mom forbade me from doing it anymore, but it helps when I'm feeling sort of useless like I can't change anything or like I'm not willing to take the plunge and just DO SOMETHING. I am cautious about cutting my hair now, though. Because last time I suddenly decided to do something, I ended up with a horrible pixie cut and if I hadn't, I would have hair past my shoulderblades now.

  7. I don't do any more on myself than cut my fringe (when I have one).
    I'm too chicken!
Yesterday my hubby cut his own hair and I was so worried I stayed in the lounge room with my eyes covered up! However, he does actually look pretty sexy now - it's not perfect but it's nice :)

  8. I'd be scared stiff to cut my own hair, so kudos to you! My mom always cuts mine for me, though; I've never been to a beauty salon or anything.

  9. I've only given myself bangs before not really cut it. But recently I gave jodi a hair cut and it was very fun! :D

  11. geekspawn - It is rather gratifying to one's sense of efficacity.

Kez - But self-fringe-trimming is the most useful. Good for you not being afraid of that. Nods nods.

Jenica - My mom cut my hair until I took over. Hehe.

pinkapplecore - Ooh, I bet it was.

    Kelsey - YAY doit!

  12. I hack at the back of mine till the top catches up. But it is almost at the stage where I will have to own a hairbrush and/ or hairdryer now, so it's time I went and got it all cut off again.

  14. Ohhh yeah. I do that ALL the time. And color it. Love self-done hair :)

  15. Edge - You're so casual with color, it really makes me want to try some semi-permanent dye.

  16. I've been cutting my own hair since I was a poor student and got sick of paying for other people to stuff up my hair... so now I do it myself! Actually I've become pretty good at it. And now that we live in an age of hair straighteners, you can fix almost any haircut if you need to. Did you know Helen Mirren cuts her own hair too?

  17. Afthi - So true. And aww, does she?! I've heard nothing un-awesome about her!
