Things that are making me happy

octopus stockings.

the scent of jasmine rice cooking.

the sound of the wind from inside my room.

realizing that my August Progress has been a success: I no longer have to think about putting sunscreen on in the morning; I do it automatically.

Postcrossing postcards.

the Postcrossing user I'm assigned to send my next postcard to is a ten-year-old German girl. she requests postcards with animals or "cool sayings" on them. aw.

academic goals.

fresh Garth Nix. how long has Lord Sunday been out? I just got it last week, anyways.

the first real rain since I got here, a huge thunderstorm...I went out and sat on the front steps of my dorm building and got soaked to the skin and watched everyone sprinting around. the trees roared and the puddles turned blue in every lightning strike. after, I got in a very hot shower with all my clothes still on, because they were already saturated and the strangeness makes it funny.

breathing through a hot damp towel. feels so lovely and cleansing, like opening the dishwasher while it's drying, or standing over a pot of cooking pasta

the difference that a professional bra-fitting makes!

blended candy-like coffee drinks that are as much whipped cream and flavoring as they are coffee. they were my gateway drug into the caffeine world when I was sixteen or so, and now I kind of scorn them and hadn't had one in a long long time, but sophistication and sugar content aside, lezbereal—they are tasty. especially the ones from Caribou that actually have candy bits sprinkled on top of the whipped cream. hello yum.

imposing an internet curfew on myself. anything I'm doing after one in the morning is bound to be stupid, anyways.

  1. ^ Agreed with Priya.
I keep thinking about joining postcrossing... I'm not sure why I haven't. I suppose I am just procrastinating. But it does sound fun.
and I thought I was the only one who enjoys taking showers with my clothes on!!!!!!!! It's quite lovely and awkward and interesting.

  2. ^ Agreed with everyone above me. THOSE STOCKINGS, MAN OH MAN.

Urrrgh, Lord Sunday is out? Been meaning to get through Lady Friday, but somehow I never do.

These "these that make you happy" posts you do are so great. When I feel under the weather myself I read them and somehow your writing brightens me up.

    Also candy-like coffee. Yum.

  3. sexy+octopus+stockings=the phrase that made my day.
I just adore the one about the thunderstorms! There's really nothing like being soaked in rain, is there?

  4. Priya - Ha, well, I expect she will have made another listing!

geekspawn - Dude yeah, get on it. It's nice to have a reliable stream of mail, even if it is from strangers. And yes, I can never get over how wrong it feels.

Emma - Lady Friday is a bit on the blah side compared to the others, as I recall. And thank you--I am so glad you do enjoy these posts.

Jenica - Hah! I suppose it is a little uncommon, now that you mention it. Yes, you know about Midwestern summer storms...<3

  5. I WANT THOSE STOCKINGS SO MUCH OMG.

And that poem you photographed, ooh lovely. <3

I like the shower-story-strangeness and mm to warm cleansing air.

I've been meaning to get a bra-fitting done for awhile now...must get on that.

  6. Erin - It's the very ending of Dante's Paradiso. And yes, it's totally worth having to flash a stranger, ha.

  7. Wow, maybe it's just because I'm a writer, but that close-up of the white page and black print, photographed with that luminous glow..that, that, is what makes me happy.
