Rat hands, rat face

Austin Scarlett. (Yes, named for the season one Project Runway designer.) Almost two years old, fat, sweet, adventurous, likes to taste fingers. Having him to keep me company is one of my favorite things about my room at home.

I asked for him for my twentieth birthday. I was home that semester and I didn't have friends in the city. And I wanted something to take care of as I was relearning how to take care of myself. It sounded slightly silly given my age, but it turned out to be the best idea.

Rats are awesome pets, in case you don't know. Much nicer and more fun than any of the mice or hamsters I've had and known.

  2. I love rats: their soft fur, their sharp feet. Would Austin climb up his tail?

  4. I have always wanted a rat. Maybe that's what I'll request for my birthday this year.

  7. aw...he does look sweet :)
mine was originally named annabelle but at 6 weeks was clearly not an annabelle, so to make up for calling him a girl i named him after the god of thunder, thor. he is still young and won't sit still long enough for a decent picture without flash!

  10. I can't say I'm a fan of rats but I am a fan of pets/animals in general. The best therapy there is - no doubt about it!!

  11. Ellie - I still call him Ratface in the voice you always used for that.

Q - Beg pardon? Like, if I dangled him by it...?

Bridey - Yes, and so smart and tidy.

Gretchen - I think you would enjoy one very much. And they're pretty inexpensive to keep.

pinkapplecore - Haha, yikes, that's basically been my experience with hamsters. My dad suggests it's because they're nocturnal: WE would be grouchy too if we were constantly being woken up during our night.

geekspawn - I hope you've seen him in the Project Runway season and not just on his show with Santino? It's much better. There are some other great characters he plays off of.

Michaela - Yeah, I was like, "max shutter speed, open the aperture aaall the way up..." Is he the normal brownish wild rat color?

Jenica - The sweet little ears. I second that.

    Odessa - Mmhmm!

Kez - So true. I also got assigned a puppy to watch and walk that year, for pay even...it was brilliant timing for me. You are a dog person, right?

  14. Yes. It sounds strange/cruel, I know, but one of my friends had a rat who would climb up his tail and she said that's how you tell you smart rats are when you're choosing one.

  15. Q - I have heard of that, but I have also heard that only skinny rats can do it, so the question is pointless for us. Ha.
