I haven't seen Australia but I know one of the writers on it who is very, very talented, its justa shame the movie was apparently so crap. He is called Richard Flannagan and he is an author from my homestate and I know you can find his work in North America because I bought one of his books in Chapters in Vancouver! Another author who I think encapsulates Australia and Australian-ness is Tim Winton, I think you would probably love his writing; I particularly love his books Dirt Music and Breathe.

I think Australia captures the beauty of the outback, so it's a good visual reference. Seconding Muriel's Wedding and The Castle, and adding to the list: Gallipoli, Picnic At Hanging Rock, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert, Rabbit-Proof Fence, Looking For Alibrandi, STRICTLY BALLROOM.
Also YouTube "Kath and Kim" - it's our most famous TV show, but keep in mind we're not all like that! Like Crocodile Dundee, it's pure parody of our beloved "bogans".
Book-wise, Tim Winton is great. There's also Bryce Courtenay, whose writing is often looked down upon by book snobs here because they're extremely sellable to the masses, but he writes a lot of Australian historical fiction so his stories may give you more of an idea about our past. The Picnic At Hanging Rock, Looking For Alibrandi and Rabbit-Proof Fence films are also based on best-selling books.
And if you like poetry, Gwen Harwood is the woman for you.
I love how you pronounce the "all" properly in alright, cos we are lazy we just say "awright" and I love when you go "oooh yeaaaah." You should marry me when you get here. I want to here your accent for the rest of my life.

oh & banjo patterson poetry is CLASSIC. really good. others off the top of my head would be judith wright & henry lawson, but that's all bush-y stuff.

I'd recommend Australia (the movie)! But yes, I see why you didn't like it.
